Nero ruled the Roman Empire from AD 54 to 68 and remains one of its most controversial emperors. This denarius was struck at Rome in AD 65–66, during the later years of his reign. The reverse shows Salus, the Roman personification of health, safety and public well-being, seated with a patera. The type conveyed a message of stability and the welfare of the emperor and the Roman state at a time when Nero’s rule was becoming increasingly troubled.
