Hadrian, AD 117–138 — AR Denarius

Hadrian ruled the Roman Empire from AD 117 to 138 and is remembered as one of its most distinctive emperors. Rather than pursuing constant expansion, he concentrated on securing the empire’s frontiers, reorganising its administration and travelling extensively through the provinces. His reign combined military discipline with a strong interest in architecture, Greek culture and the wider Roman world. This silver denarius was struck at Rome around AD 120–121. The obverse carries Hadrian’s laureate portrait, while the reverse shows Libertas seated, holding a branch and sceptre. The type reflects one of the central themes of Hadrian’s early reign: presenting his government as stable, legitimate and respectful of Roman civic ideals after the more overtly military rule of Trajan.
