Antoninus Pius — AV Aureus

Antoninus Pius ruled the Roman Empire from AD 138 to 161, a period remembered for stability, prosperity and relatively peaceful government. Adopted by Hadrian as his successor, he became known for careful administration, respect for tradition and a style of rule very different from the military emperors of later centuries. This gold aureus was struck at Rome in AD 156–157, towards the end of his reign. The obverse carries the mature portrait of Antoninus Pius, while the reverse shows Victory advancing with wreath and palm branch, traditional symbols of Roman success and imperial authority. The coin combines an exceptionally strong imperial portrait with the prestige of the aureus, the principal gold denomination of the Roman world. Antoninus Pius, AD 138–161 — AV Aureus.
